Cafayate: the heart of Argentina's wine country
book online
Cafayate, Calchaquí Valley, northwest Argentina
The Calchaquí Valley just south of the city of Salta in northwest Argentina is an area of outstanding natural beauty famed for its spectacular views, fine wines and equestrian sports. The area derives its name from the now extinct Calchaquí tribe of South American Indians.
A tour of the network of valleys that form Calchaquí reveals an extraordinary range of geographical features from mountain deserts to subtropical forests. At the heart of the area is the town of Cafayate, lying 1,683 metres above sea level. It is the most important wine growing area in the Calchaquí Valley and benefits from the region's uniquely dry weather and low humidity. Many of the wineries are open to the public.
Just outside Cafayate is the sporting and residential development of La Estancia de Cafayate and it is here that the Grace Cafayate hotel and residential villas complex is being created.
